E-Cigarette and Vaping Health Risks
Short and Long-Term Health Consequences of Vaping
The vaping industry entered U.S. markets just over a decade ago and has grown exponentially in the past few years. Many fear that the real dangers associated with E-Cigarettes and vaping have yet to be discovered. Studies are now beginning to show just how dangerous e-cigarettes are and their short-and long-term health consequences. The vaping industry has come under heavy scrutiny for its promotion of unsafe products to consumers.
What is an E-Cigarette?
An E-Cigarette is a handheld, battery-operated nicotine delivery device. The mechanism is designed to heat up a liquid containing nicotine which is then vaporized and inhaled by the user. The device was initially marketed as a “safe” alternative to smoking. E-cigarette marketers even promoted the device as a “safe and effective smoking cessation aid.” In 2008, the World Health Organization (WHO) debunked that theory, stating definitively that there were no rigorous, peer-reviewed studies showing that e-cigarettes were an effective nicotine replacement therapy.
Regulatory agencies such as the Food and Drug Administration (FDA) have worked vigorously to determine the actual health risks posed by e-cigarettes and other vaping devices. The FDA has issued warnings about the use of e-cigarettes, expressing concern over how the products are marketed to the public and the fact that clinical studies have yet to be conducted. The unforeseen growth of the vaping industry has meant that e-cigarettes have been somewhat unregulated. Studies are now being held across the globe to determine the full dangers associated with e-cigarettes and vaping.
Short-Term Health Risks Associated with E-Cigarettes and Vaping
As the use of e-cigarettes and other Electronic Nicotine Delivery Systems (ENDS) grow, so do
the reports of injuries associated with their use. Known short-term dangers of vaping include:
- Inhalation of toxic chemicals such as heavy metals, contaminants, formaldehyde,
benzene, and diethylene glycol. - Injuries caused by the device exploding
- Respiratory illnesses leading to difficulty breathing, shortness of breath, chest pain,
vomiting, diarrhea, fevers, and fatigue - Addiction to nicotine
Long-Term Risks Associated With Vaping and E-Cigarettes
The long-term health risks associated with vaping are still being studied. It is clear that the use of e-cigarettes can significantly damage a person’s lungs. The FDA, along with the Centers for Disease Control and Prevention (CDC), has now issued a stark warning about lung illnesses associated with the use of vaping products.
While the long-term effects are not completely known at this time, there are a few things we do know:
1. Most e-cigarettes contain nicotine, and nicotine can have harmful effects on brain development. Youths and adolescent brains are especially susceptible to harming their brain development and altering nerve cell functionality, with increased exposure to nicotine.
2. The FDA is investigating links between vaping and seizures. With the dramatic increase in vaping related illnesses, the FDA launched an investigation in April, 2019.
3. To date, over 60 chemical compounds have been found in e-liquids. Several of which of been identified by researchers as either harmful, or potentially harmful to e-cigarette users.
Popcorn Lung
Bronchiolitis obliterans, commonly referred to as Popcorn Lung, occurs when a person’s tiniest airways (the bronchioles) are inflamed. Inflammation of these airways is generally caused by the inhalation of certain hazardous chemicals such as diacetyl. Diacetyl is a chemical commonly found in the juices used in vaping devices and e-cigarettes. Prolonged exposure and inhalation of this chemical is irreversible and can be severe, causing respiratory problems.
Wet Lung
Wet Lung, or hypersensitivity pneumonitis, can occur when hazardous materials are inhaled into your lungs. The chemicals inside of e-cigarettes contain chemicals known to create this immune response that can lead to respiratory failure.
VAPI
The CDC recently issued an official Health Advisory regarding the outbreak of severe pulmonary disease associated with using e-cigarette products. Severe pulmonary disease includes respiratory issues, gastrointestinal symptoms, and fatigue, fever or weight loss and can lead to death. The condition has proved fatal for some people and is directly linked to vaping.
In addition to potentially deadly lung damage, the use of e-cigarettes is may cause damage to your DNA and brain development. Studies indicate that vaping may increase your risk for a heart attack, seizures, and even cancer.
Vape Battery Explosions
Since the emergence of the first commercially successful E-Cigarettes in the United States, there have been issues with the product design. Reports that the vaping devices catch fire or even explode for no reason begin to make headlines. In July 2017, the U.S. Fire Administration issued their findings regarding Electronic Cigarette Fires and Explosions in the United States 2009 – 2016.
According to the report, the combination of the e-cigarette and the use of a lithium-ion battery presented “a new and unique hazard to consumers.” Lithium-ion batteries can present a danger when they are overcharged or improperly used. These batteries, by nature, are prone to overheating having what is called a “known explosion hazard.” They are sensitive to extreme temperature and can combust if placed near metal. E-cigarettes that use a lithium-ion battery present additional harm in that they are kept in close proximity to the body. This proximity to the body often leads to catastrophic injuries.
Injuries Caused by E-Cigarettes and Vape Batteries
- 2nd and 3rd-degree burns
- Loss of a body part
- Lacerations to the face
- Facial fractures
- Smoke inhalation
- Loss of teeth
- Eye injuries
- Damages caused by projectiles
